Sullivan Parks and Rec gears up for summer

SULLIVAN – The Sullivan Parks and Recreation Department is busy power-washing the pool, mowing the grass and lining the ball fields just in time for summer. Baseball and softball games have already started, and the swimming pool is now fully compliant with federal guidelines regarding entrapment-free drains and intakes, Parks and Recreation Department Director Dave Cochran said. The federally mandated improvement came at a price of more than $14,000, he said. The entrapment-free drains and intakes are a safeguard against drowning.

Parks and Recreation Department employees were busy last week power-washing the pool deck in preparation of its opening day during Memorial Day weekend on Saturday, May 29. Cochran encouraged anyone wanting to reserve the pool for a birthday party, family reunion or.....

Search called off for St. Clair woman

ST. CLAIR – Although the search for a woman who went missing from her home in a rural area south of St. Clair two weeks ago is officially over, Margaret Unger’s family hasn’t give up yet. Barely able to contain himself, an emotional Ray Unger pleaded for the public’s help in finding his wife, who strayed from their home in a troubled mental state on April 19.

Between sobs, he thanked the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department and the hundreds of volunteers who have spent several days searching for Margaret on foot, all-terrain vehicles and even in the air. “Please continue looking...I just don’t want anyone to......

Sullivan businessman Ron Gawer passes at 63

SULLIVAN – The Sullivan area lost a well-known businessman when Ron Gawer passed away on April 19, 2010 due to a recent illness.  Gawer was 63 years old. A native of Sullivan, most local citizens knew Gawer as the owner/operator of Harry’s Tire Service, a local business bought by his father Harry in 1952.  Married to his late wife Tracy (Scott) in 1965, they took over the business in 1970 and ran it together until her death in March 2009.

Gawer was a man, that to many, was larger than life.  It was never more apparent than seeing him with any of his and Tracy’s children; daughters Julie (Darrah), Jeniffer (Rubenstein) or son, Scott Gawer.  His face was filled with pride when speaking about any of the three.

To say that Gawer had a contagious and gregarious personality would be.......
