Sullivan's Main Street loses a landmark

SULLIVAN – After being a fixture in downtown Sullivan for several decades, Harman’s Home Furnishings is closing. Dean Harman, who owns the furniture and appliance shop, is sad he’ll have to shut the doors on June 19. Harman cities the sagging economy as the reason he can no longer sustain his business. “It’s the economy – at least I blame it on that,” Harman said, sitting in the office of a building he’s spent most of his life in.

Council passes on issues due to absent aldermen

SULLIVAN – There were several items on the City Council’s recent agenda, but many of them didn’t get voted on due to the absence of three aldermen.“We do not have enough members to vote on ordinances,” Mayor J.T. Hardy said at the beginning of the meeting, noting aldermen Michael Lohden, Tom Leasor and Dennis Watz would be unable to attend.

The council was scheduled to vote on ordinances involving a contract for legal services with Hasen, Stierberger, Downard, Melebrink & Schroeder, LLC, the purchase of equipment for the city’s sanitary lift stations, and a change order for an additional $434,000 to remove extra sludge from the lagoon at the wastewater treatment plant.

The last point was one of contention at the council’s past meeting when Jacob’s Engineering told the city more sludge – roughly a half a million dollars worth – than the firm originally estimated would need to be removed from the lagoon. The engineering firm initially estimated.....

Deputy from Sullivan indicted on sex charge

SULLIVAN – Damon Berti, a former Franklin County deputy from Sullivan, was arrested Thursday night on grand jury indictments for sexual assault and two counts of sexual contact with a prisoner, Franklin County Sheriff Gary Toelke announced Friday morning.Berti, 24, is currently being held at the Crawford County Jail and his bond has been set at $25,000, according to a news release Toelke issued to the media.

The indictments resulted from a complaint filed with the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office earlier this year by a female inmate who was incarcerated in the Franklin County Jail. Berti was immediately suspended from his duties at the jail and later resigned pending a.....
