SULLIVAN – The son of District 111 Republican candidate Dave Schatz was one of two persons killed Thursday morning in a freak accident on I-44 that also claimed the life of a St. James student. Daniel Schatz, 19, was the driver of a pickup involved in the 10:15 a.m. accident that occurred on eastbound I-44 near Gray Summit.

Dave Schatz confirmed to the Sullivan Journal today that it was his son who died in the accident. According to media reports of the accident, an eastbound tractor-trailer rig suddenly slowed for traffic. Apparently, the silver pickup being driven by Daniel Schatz was unable to avoid slamming into the rear of the tractor-trailer. Behind the Schatz pickup were two St. James school buses loaded with band students en route to a day at Six Flags. One of the buses then ran into the rear of Schatz’s pickup and was catapulted on top of the vehicle. The second bus then ran into the first bus. A female passenger on the first bus was killed.

As of press time, the Missouri State Highway Patrol continued to investigate the accident. Stay tuned to our Facebook page and Website for updates.
