SULLIVAN – Candidate filing has officially closed for those running in the April 6, 2010 elections. When filing closed at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 19, six people had signed up for Sullivan City Council. In Ward I, incumbent Tom Leasor is running unopposed. In Ward II, incumbent Paul McCulloch is up against resident George Dodson. Ward III will see a race between incumbent Jarrett Dace, former Sullivan mayor James K. Schatz and resident Robert Hathman. While some candidates weren’t in a hurry to file, those in Ward III didn’t waste any time. Dace and Hathman signed up on the first day filing opened in December and Schatz filed shortly thereafter. Dace said he wants to continue his aldermanship because he’s enjoyed his time on the council and wants to keep serving the people of Sullivan. Schatz, who previously served three terms as mayor before being defeated by Mayor J.T. Hardy in the April 2009 election, said he’s running mainly because he wants to see the completion of the North Loop. He also said he wants to work to bring businesses to Sullivan. Hathman, who says he rarely misses a council meeting, wants to be a watchdog for the citizens. He specifically wants to help citizens by lowering water, sewer and electric rates, and believes he has a plan for doing so. He’s also interested in establishing a TIF commission.
Dodson, who is running against McCulloch in Ward II, said he wants to help bring jobs to Sullivan. He also said his retirement status means he’ll have a lot of time to devote to the council.
In Bourbon, Mary Heywood is running against current Mayor Leonard Armstrong. Ward I incumbent Mark Hilsey will be up against resident Gene Kulaga. In Ward II, incumbent James Stanley Bell is running unopposed.
Heywood, who previously served as mayor of Bourbon for nine years from 1997 to 2006, said she’s running again because she feels she can be of help to the city. When Armstrong was asked why he wanted to run again he said, “Why not?”
Four people have filed to run for two spots on the Sullivan School District Board of Education. Robby Berti, Randy Stack, Ed Merrell and Randy Carey are vying for the positions. The incumbents, Tammy Watz and Patti Waller, did not file for another term. Richard Tutterrow filed to run as well, but withdrew his name, Sullivan School District Board of Education Secretary Sandy Coppage said. Tutterrow said he had to withdraw when he learned his college course schedule would conflict with school board meetings.
Board president Marsha Tierney, Vice President Marty Tiefenbrunn and member Jimmy Frye still have another year on the board. The terms for board members Phil Thomure and Shannon Johanning don’t expire until April 2012.
On the Crawford County R-I School District Board of Education, incumbents Carol Hofstetter (vice president) and Shannon Radford have filed for another term. Resident David Kline also has thrown his name into the hat. Those three are running for two open spots.
Board president Darrel Bosse, Jeff Froning, Kelli Rapp, Charlotte Dunn and Charlene Robertson are not up for re-election this year.
