SULLIVAN – Have you ever zipped over the Meramec River at 30 mph? Or spent an hour and a half exploring the treetops? Now you can. After nearly three months of construction, testing and training the Caveman Zipline at Meramec Caverns is now open.“There’s 3,000 feet of total zipline, eight towers, four ziplines and three swinging rope bridges,” said Lester Turilli, owner and operator of the Caveman Zipline. Zipping over the river and through woods, the Caveman Zipline offers a unique opportunity to see Missouri from a different perspective.

“I have ridden several ziplines throughout the United States” Turilli said. “We don’t have the longest, but I think we have the best course set up. It comes back to where you start, and you don’t actually have to get off the zipline. Most of the other ziplines that I have been on you actually have to...

BOURBON – Clean living and church. That’s all you need. And maybe a little luck. That seems to be the consensus among Missouri’s oldest citizens, including my grandmother, who celebrated birthday 108 with family and friends at her home two days before the New Year.Born Dec. 30, 1901, in this small northeast Crawford County community, Vera Vieman has defied the odds-makers and actuaries by…oh, say, 30 years or more. Still living at home and looking forward to more birthdays – she says 120 sounds good – smart bettors keep their cash off the table. I think a few of us learned that lesson (thankfully) a long time ago.

Attired for the party in a bright red top and matching earrings, Vera stole the afternoon with more than the exalting dignity that 108 years provides – she seized the day with songs, tales of a wonderful life, and fond memories that have left indelible marks upon a seemingly unstoppable mind. To bring and share the joy of the moment, three daughters and a son, as well two grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and a special friend, Beverly Mayberry, who has also dutifully served as a longtime caregiver, joined Vera in her....
