SULLIVAN – Get a dollar, lose a dollar. As Bourbon will be gaining a Dollar General, Sullivan will be losing its One Dollar Shop at the end of the week. Elaine Cross, who has been the store manager for the past four and a half years, is heartbroken. “I’m just sick over it,” she said last week, notifying customers of the Aug. 27 closing.....

SULLIVAN – After more than three decades on Main Street, the University of Cosmetology has moved to a more visible location on the South Service Road. Now open in the former Movie Gallery building near Subway and Wally’s Hardware, the University of Cosmetology is already seen an increase in interest. “It’s a good location and we have better visibility,” said Annette Hill, who owns the cosmetology school. When a buyer purchased the Main Street building a few months ago and the old Movie Gallery location became available, Hill said she jumped at the chance to move and give the school better exposure. So far it’s working. People were trying to get in the school on Monday and Tuesday.....

SULLIVAN – Some north side residents say summertime is too noisy, thanks to a battle being waged between a nearby vineyard and destructive birds feeding on its grapes. Vineyard owners say their loud cannon is a necessary deterrent designed to keep their business alive and the birds away. “It wakes me up every morning,” North and South Road resident Leigh Ann Reeves said of the gun-like booms that echo randomly throughout the day. “It’s like someone’s banging on our house.” Reeves, who lives directly across the street from Belmont Vineyards, isn’t alone in describing the dawn-to-dusk sound.

BOURBON – Dollar General will be coming to Bourbon – possibly as soon as January 2011 – now that the Board of Aldermen has approved the creation of the Bourbon Route 66 Community Improvement District, which imposes an additional one-cent sales tax and property tax on the property where the store will operate.
