It’s a tough call. Should the Sullivan High School retire Daniel Schatz’s football jersey? Some say yes, and will deliver tons of signatures to the school board this week offering proof of support. Others say no, that’s it not proper protocol. Schatz was fatally injured in an automobile accident Aug. 5, just a little more than a year after graduating from high school.
The popular young man was a good athlete – I believe he participated in four sports. After high school, he secured a walk-on football spot at the University of Missouri - Columbia. Mizzou and Columbia has distractions. So this fall, Schatz was going to get serious about school, joining his brother at Westminster College in nearby Fulton. That’s the sign of maturity. For Schatz, football was not going to....

Many of us have grown up with the Meramec River. It is absolutely an outdoor treasure that we’re lucky to have. Some of my best stories begin with “One time we were down at the river and…” or “Do you remember that time at the state park when…” And like my dad, I too can claim fame to having jumped off a bridge or two. Not smart, but part of life along a river.
But in the last few years, life along the river has become more commonly associated with death and crime. More floaters, more drinking, nudity and drug use has served a few outfitters and lawyers a nice living. Remember the “Trouble On The River?” billboards along I-44? The exploitation of the river is costing all of us. How so?
In many ways. Not to mention the numerous deaths, near-drowning....

When Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer signed into law a new illegal immigration act two weeks ago, I figured on all hell breaking loose. Sure enough, most of the caterwauling is coming from those who either have never read the law or don’t care what it says. They also don’t care that Border States are taking a vicious beating – literally – by illegal immigrants.
The fact that the federal government refuses to enforce current laws on the books has put a lot of blood on California, Arizona and Texas streets. The new Arizona state law allows police officers to check citizenry and immigration status on suspected illegals. Consider this:
*Phoenix had 300 kidnappings in 2008, with most of those tied to illegal drug and human smuggling. That’s 300 kidnappings in ONE city in America in one year!
*Assaults on Border Patrol agents are up 46 percent, with 1,097 assaults.... |

Cool Hand Luke is a 1949 massive chunk of U.S. Army steel firepower. That’s the cannon’s name – it’s actually written on it, go check. It’s been sitting next to the local library for some time. Other than some woman smacking into it with a car, it doesn’t get much attention. Of course, kids climb on it, people stare at it. And Mrs. Pondrom – who has the distinction of living near it - often wonders why the city doesn’t take better care of it.
But what I’m wondering is why the VFW in Oak Grove think they should have it?
The issue has come up before, but it didn’t get very far. The citizens of Sullivan, it seems, love their Cool Hand Luke. And so do I and most of the people I have asked. The issue has resurfaced because the....

There doesn’t seem to be much discernible difference between what people call a “press release” and a “news release” – in fact, some say there is no difference. There is, but let’s say there isn’t. The problem is: what are journalists supposed to do with them?
Let’s start with what we ARE NOT supposed to do with press releases. Our competition around the corner is well known for printing press releases in the entirety - no changes, no modifications. That’s not good. Occasionally a byline might sit atop something that someone else wrote – that’s plagiarism. And that’s even worse. But the real issue concerns the purpose and intent of a press release.
When we receive a news release (or press release, whichever), the intent of the.... |
