Spring Bluff Heritage Day to be Held June 7
The Franklin County Historical Society is again sponsoring Spring Bluff Heritage
Day. It will be a day of community-centered fun and entertainment, with an emphasis
on the history of the area. Festivities will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 7.
There will be plenty to keep everyone busy until the day ends at 4 p.m. As in the
past, the event will be held at the Spring Bluff Retreat Center, also known as the
Baptist Camp.
There will be no admission charge this year, but to offset expenses and provide seed
money for future events, there will be a donation jar near the entrance for
contributions.
There will be many booths offering crafts and displaying items that celebrate the
heritage of the community. Spring Bluff 4-H will provide a petting zoo for the
youngsters.
All former Spring Bluff May Queens are asked to gather at the pavilion at 11 a.m.
for a photograph.
Spring Bluff native Steve Schmidt will give a strongman demonstration at 11:15 a.m.
He bends nails, bolts and horseshoes with his teeth and lifts a platform loaded with
concrete blocks weighting 350 pounds.
The Slankard Brothers will provide the main musical entertainment, offering
bluegrass and gospel music from noon until 2 p.m. A donation jar will also be set up
for them since they are giving up their entire day to help out without any promise
of payment.
During the day several local musicians will take the stage, including Glen Blesi,
Randy Tyree, and Grant Withers.
Bill and Beverly Turner will bring their 1911 covered wagon and serve as the primary
food vendor, offering chuck wagon-style fare including pork steak, bratwurst, beans,
and cobbler. Other organizations will be selling drinks.
A silent auction will close at 3 p.m. and the live auction will start afterwards.
Many local merchants in Stanton and Sullivan have contributed items for the auction.
Local women’s clubs are donating pies to be auctioned. Debbie Paul has made up a
series of decorative pillows featuring historic schools and buildings in the Spring
Bluff area.
Businesses donating funds or auction items for the event include Meramec Caverns,
the New Haven Leader, Joe Pennock Photography, Strauser Drug, Westgate Music,
Valvoline Express Care, Five Loaves Natural Food Store, Elements, Dean Brueseke Tax
Preparation, Gift Emporium, Eaton Funeral Home, Antique Toy Museum, T&T Nursery,
Riverside Reptile & Wildlife, Orscheln’s, Du-Kum-Inn, Meramec Community Mission, the
Bank of Sullivan and Randy Tyree’s Art Studio.
Craft booths, demonstration booths, and exhibitions will compete for the attention
of attendees. It is not too late to book space for the event but the committee needs
to know soon so as to plan the grounds layout. Booth space is free to non-profit
organizations or exhibitors who are not selling anything. Anyone setting up a
for-profit booth will be charged $10, which must be paid in advance. All booths must
be family-oriented and must be approved and fall within guidelines established by
the Spring Bluff Heritage Day Committee. Period costumes are encouraged. No alcohol
will be permitted on the grounds.
A table will be set up to display photographs of the greater Spring Bluff area.
Another table will display school yearbooks. Spring Bluff Baptist Church will have a
special booth celebrating their centennial at the Heritage Day.
The Spring Bluff Retreat Center is located just over a mile west of Hwy. 185 on
Franklin County Road AC, about 10 miles south of Beaufort and six miles north of Sullivan. In
case of rain, the event will be postponed until the following Saturday.
For more information, to book a booth, or to donate items, please contact Chairman
Glen Blesi at 573-927-2772 or Paulette Ely at the Meramec Mission. Others serving
on the Spring Bluff Heritage Day Committee are Benny and Marie Lamke, Debbie Paul,
